Calculated Fields

Calculated Fields are fields you create inside your Dimensions or Measures Pane which are composed of Custom Expressions, Parameters and/or Functions. When a Calculated Field is created it appears just like your other Dimensions or Measures in the Data Pane and can be dragged into any of the decks which accept Dimensions or Measures. Calculated Fields present in the Dimensions or Measures Pane are denoted by a function symbol in front of their name like  ^ƒxCalculatedField1.

How to Create a Calculated Field

1. Right click in the Dimensions or Measures Pane and select [Create Calculated Field...]

2. The [Create Calculated Field] Dialog appears so you can provide a name for your Calculated Field

3. Write out your formula within the [Expression] area for your Calculated Field. If you double click on Fields, Parameters or Functions, those items will get inserted in the Expression pane where your cursor sits. Details about the field you left click appear on the right. Click [Save] to save your edits.

If a Data Source has duplicate columns with the same name, the last occurrence of the column will be used when a calculated field references the column.

Your Calculated Field will appear in either the Dimensions or Measures pane depending on what Data Type gets produced by your calculation (dates or strings are Dimensions, numbers are Measures).

The icons for Calculated Fields indicate ƒ_x to their left to make identifying Calculated Fields easier.

Right clicking on any Calculated Field allows you to edit it by choosing [Edit...]

All Visual Analytics workbooks will automatically generate the Calculated Field "Number of Records" when connected to a Data Source.

After your Calculated Field has been created you can rename it by right clicking on it and choosing [Rename...] from the right click context menu.
