Bins allow you to group measure values into collections and use those collections as discrete dimensions, which is especially useful when generating our newly available Histograms. Right click on a Measure and select Create Bins to configure Bins. Bins appear in the Dimensions pane and are indicated by a blue Histogram icon for easy identification. You can right click on a Bin in the Dimensions pane to edit its details. By default, bins use the name of the measure they are derived from followed by (bin).
In the Create Bin dialog you can edit the bin name then set the size of the bins by entering a value, creating a new parameter or choosing any parameters you've already created. The Create Bin Dialog also displays Range of Values information for the measure you are binning, including Minimum value, Maximum value and the Difference between them. When you create your Bins for a Measure, a new Bin Dimension appears in the Dimensions pane.
Clicking the Size of Bins radio button lets you divide the entire range of values into a series of small intervals.
Clicking the Number of Bins radio button determines how many Bins will be displayed, then groups values into appropriate ranges to create that many Bins. Setting its value will force a specific number of Bins to display.
To change the details of a group of Bins, right click on a Bin in the Dimensions pane, and select Edit. Use the Bin Dialog to adjust its Name, and configure its Size of Bins or Number of Bins, then click OK. Bins are unique in that they cannot be converted to measures like the other dimensions.
With the inclusion of the Histogram visualization, we offer an additional way to view the distribution of data. You can use bins to form distinct groupings of measure values to form bars. Histogram visualizations require 1 Bin and 1 or more Measures.
