MS SQL Server Debugger (Revision #22)

The new Microsoft SQL Server Debugger has been designed to help with testing and debugging of SQL functions and procedures for Microsoft SQL Server. Its debugging features include:

• Setting a break point in the function or procedure body. A user can set a break point at any line in the function or procedure source code in order to run it up to this line. The breakpoints can be viewed in the Breakpoints tab.
• Running the function or procedure up to the break point with parameters provided by the user. The execution can be stopped at any time using the stop button. Output messages for the execution can be viewed in the Console tab.
• "Step Over" button allows the user to move to the next line of the code.
• "Step Into" button allows the user to step into the next block.
• "Step Return" button allows the user to step to the next return.
• The user can enter variables and view their values during the execution in the Variables tab.
• The user can enter expressions and watch their values in the Watches tab.

Configuring DCOM security on SQL Server for Aqua Data Studio debugger:

In case granting "administrators" permission is a concern, then :-

• You can create a local user under "Users" group.
• Then go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options :-
  • Double-click "DCOM: Machine Access Restrictions" policy, click Edit Security, add the user created above, allow "Remote Access"
  • Double-click "DCOM: Machine Launch Restrictions" policy, click Edit Security, add the user created above, allow "Local Launch", "Remote Launch", "Local Activation", "Remote Activation"
  • Double-click "Network Access: Sharing and Security Model for local accounts" policy, and set to Classic"
• Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services > Computers > right-click My Computer > click Properties > click COM Security tab :-
  • In Access Permissions section, click Edit Default > add the user created above, allow "Remote Access"
  • In Launch and Activation Permissions section > click Edit Default > add the user created above, allow "Local Launch", "Remote Launch", "Local Activation", "Remote Activation"

(The Component Services section, to be more accurate, you can go to a specific component, and grant permission from there, instead of from "My Computer", which is a blanket grant)
