4.3 License Management (Revision #0)

A key administrative aspect of managing Aqua Data Server is ensuring that you have sufficient licenses to cover all activity in the system. License enforcement in Aqua Data Server is based on thread count and is not based on user or processor count. The License Management interface provides a central place to view and manage all of your licensing information. Since licensing is thread based, when you purchase a license key, the key is embed with the number of threads for which the license is valid. After you activate the license in Aqua Data Server, the system enforces the maximum number of threads that can execute simultaneously. e.g. if you purchased a 10 thread license, Aqua Data Server will only allow up to 10 threads from executing simultaneously within the application. Most actions such as accessing the GUI or executing a script in Aqua Data Server require a thread license. To increase the number of simultaneously executing threads, you must purchase additional thread licenses. Aqua Data Server calculates the total number of threads available by summing up the licensed units across all active licenses.

Add License

Adding a purchased license to Aqua Data Server is a two step process: adding the licensing key and activating it.

• Adding License Key:  
  1. Ensure that you have the license registration email. 
  2. Click Add License Key button in the action bar.
  3. Enter the Company Name & License Key information exactly as in the license registration email without any leading or trailing spaces. 
  4. Once you have entered the information, click "Save". The license will show up in your list with a status of "Not Activated"

• Activating License:  
  1. In the action column next to the license just added, choose "Activate License." This attempts to perform an online activation. However, if you are behind a proxy or firewall, this operation may fail. In such a situation, try the "Manual License Activation."

License Usage Information

To help monitor your license usage Aqua Data Server provides license usage information in aggregate as well as in tabular format.

• License Usage Summary
  • Total Licensed Units (TLU): The number of purchased and activated licenses. This is the number that is used by Aqua Data Server to determine the maximum number of simultaneous threads that can be running in parallel.
  • Maximum Licenses Used (MLU): To help monitor your thread usage, this number shows you the maximum threads that have run in parallel since the application server was last started. If this number is much smaller than your Total Licensed Units, you do not need more licenses. If this number equals Total Licensed Units, then you might have just the right number or too few. You should then review the contention fields to determine whether you have too few licenses.
  • Total Contention: This number shows you the total time that all threads were blocked due to the lack of additional thread licenses being available since the application server was last started. If this number is significantly > 0 and your MLU = TLU, the system is encountering a fair amount of contention resulting in blocked threads. You should investigate whether you have some errant background jobs or whether the system usage has exceeded capacity and additional licenses need to be purchased.
  • Average Contention: This number shows you the average time that all threads were blocked due to the lack of additional thread licenses being available since the application server was last started. You can use this number along with the other license usage summary information to help determine whether contention is a significant problem in the system or not.
• License List Information
  •  Status
    • "Activated" - License has been successfully activated and is part of the Total Licensed Units
    • "Not Activated" - License has not been activated and is not part of the Total Licensed Units. You should perform an online or manual activation on such a license.
  • Licensed Units: The number of threads in parallel that can be run with this license
  • Days Left: All purchased licenses have Days Left as blank as they do not expire. Only an activated evaluation license will specify a value for Days Left

Remove License

You might want to remove a license from Aqua Data Server if your evaluation has expired or if you have incorrectly entered the license information. In case of incorrect entry, you can also edit the license information directly instead of deleting and then re-adding it. However, you will need to deactivate the license first prior to editing. Similar to adding a license, removing a license is a two step process: deactivating the license key and then deleting it. 

• Deactivating License:  In the action column next to the license you want to remove, choose either the "Deactivate License" icon or the "Manual License Deactivation" icon. Use the manual approach if you are behind a proxy server or firewall and the server does not have access to the internet. Once a license is deactivated it is no longer part of the Total Licensed Unit count and its status will be changed to "Not Activated"
• Removing License:  After successfully deactivating the license you can choose the delete action to remove the license from the system.
