1.8 Locale Settings - Language, Date or Time

Aqua Data Sever displays language, date and time customized to the users preferences. Preferences for the user must be submitted at the new user registration.

Once set by the Administrator locale variables can be modified and saved by the user within the Title Bar -> “Settings” -> “Edit Settings” page.

Aqua Data Server stores time and date information in Coordinated Universal Time units (UTC). Stored time and date information is displayed to every user in the local time based on the time zone information entered and saved in the user profile. The user profile also includes locale settings for the user’s GUI language and the date and time display format conventions. Locale settings saved in the user profile have a “permanent” effect on the view of the GUI for this user. They will take effect every time the user logs in to the system. Locale settings can be altered for the period of one session by selecting a language from the Interface Language dropdown list in the upper-right corner of the Aqua Data Server browser window.

 

Display Information Locale Settings

Locale variables can be set to “Default” or to a value chosen from the dropdown list available for each variable.

“Default” Display Information Locale Settings

If the locale values are set to “Default” its actual value will be taken from the user browser locale settings ( such as language, country and variant). Date, time and Decimal Separator settings will be used based on the Java language Locale class conventions specific to the language and country selected.

For the locale variables set to “Default” in the user profile, the corresponding GUI appearance will change every time the temporary change is performed through the Interface Language Dropdown list.

Example

All Locale settings were set to “Default” in the user profile.

The image below shows a fragment of the "AquaScripts" tab that displays date and time information.

The next image shows the same tab with the locale changed from “English (US)” to “German”. Besides the GUI language format, the date and time have also changed. “Day-Month-Year” date format and “military time” format (14:08 = 2:08 PM) are officially used in Germany and therefore applied to the GUI with the “German” locale selected.

 

We recommend using default locale settings when creating a new user profile. Users will be able to modify particular settings. “Default” settings allow automated changes of the data display format when the language of the GUI is changed.

User Defined Display Information Locale Settings

“Default” locale settings can be altered by users. Once altered to a user defined value the locale setting will not change its format even if the GUI language is changed.

Time and date user defined settings allow sufficient flexibility in formatting date and time output.

Time and date formats may be selected from the drop-down list or typed in the corresponding field. Predefined "pattern symbols" must be used as shown in the lower section of the drop-down list which will be parsed by the system and displayed as date and time elements. Any other characters may be typed in single quotes (‘) that will be displayed next to the date and time.

In the screenshot below the user selected the date and time format – d M y (day, month, 2 digit year) accompanied with the “My Date Format…” string.

The “Date/Time Format” field entry will be

d M y ‘My Date Format...’

 

 

The resulting effect of this user defined date and time format in all languages will be as shown on the screenshot below.

 

Examples

The following examples show how date and time patterns are interpreted in the U.S. locale. The given date and time is 2001-07-04 12:08:56 the local time in the U.S. Pacific Time time zone.

Email Information Locale Settings

“Email Information” locale settings in the User Settings pursue the same logic as the “Display Information”. They define the language and the data format of the e-mails auto generated by Aqua Data Server and received by this user. The difference in the Display Information is that the “Language” and the “Time Zone” variables do not have the “Default” value. They have to be set to a user defined (or Administrator defined) value. The reason for this is that sending an e-mail does not involve an Internet browser, therefore it is not possible to obtain values for these variables from the user browser settings. All other “Email Information” locale variables can be either set to the “Default” or a user defined value.

 

“Default” Email Information Locale Settings

Once the “Language” variable is defined, all other variables set to the “Default” derive their values based on the Java language Locale class conventions specific to the language and country selected. Changing the interface language (with the Interface Language dropdown in the upper-right corner of the browser window) will not affect the “Email Information” locale settings.

 

User Defined Email Information Locale Settings

All Email Information Locale variables set to a user defined value will remain with this value regardless of the Email “Language” setting saved in the user profile.

The user can construct custom time and date format patterns using the pattern symbols the same way it is described in the “User Defined Display Information” Locale Settings section.
